Southern Water has brought in tankers and temporary pumps as it works on a sinkhole at Appley, caused by a collapsed sewer.
The hole appeared earlier in January and Southern Water has been on site since January 25.
Through it runs a one metre wide sewer pipe, that carries all of Ryde’s wastewater and storm water.
The tankers and pumps are critical to maintaining wastewater services, says Southern Water.
The repair is expected to take several weeks.
First, a pipe is being laid to divert the flow around the affected area, so the tankers and pumps can be stood down.
Work will start next week and the pipe will sit along the beach wall, out the way of work in the main area.
The beach-side footpath will remain open.
A temporary barrier has been in place
Southern Water said: "We recognise the disruption this has caused locally and apologise to those affected.
"We wish to reassure customers that we are working to rectify the issue as quickly as possible and thank them for their patience and for giving our frontline workers the safe distance they need to carry out their work safely."
