FIVE more people have died on the Isle of Wight, after testing positive for Covid-19.

The latest deaths were at St Mary's Hospital, in Newport, and were recorded over the past three days.

It means 97 Islanders have now died in hospital after testing positive for Covid since records began - and raises the Island's toll, in January alone, to 41.

A further 54 Islanders have also died in the community - at home, in a care home or in a hospice, since the pandemic began.

The Isle of Wight has recorded 3,850 positive cases of the virus this month, with the next daily case data released at around 4pm today (Thursday).

Since the start of the pandemic, 151 people have died on the Isle of Wight after contracting Covid-19.

Meanwhile, yesterday's daily update showed a spike of 138 new Covid cases, after previous daily updates had revealed a promising downward trend for the Isle of Wight, with the 66 cases recorded on Tuesday far below January's daily average of more than 190.

It is being reported that Home Secretary Priti Patel will put the country on its final warning this evening - follow the current lockdown rules or face tougher measures.
