Work will be carried out on the Floating Bridge later today (Thursday), two days after it was taken out of action due to a welding problem.
It will be the fifth suspension in a month for the chain ferry between Cowes and East Cowes.
A replacement boat for foot passengers and cyclists will run between 9:30am and 3:30pm.
It went off on unexpectedly on Tuesday, returning to service later in the day.
Isle of Wight Council said: "Essential modifications to the Cowes floating bridge will see a replacement launch service brought in.
"The maintenance concerns the vessel’s hydraulic pipes which cannot be accessed when the vessel is in the water.
"The timing of these works is dependent upon the tides.
"We apologise for any inconvenience."
