Video: The chain ferry this morning (Wednesday)
A prow part on the East Cowes-side, fixed in late December after a breakdown, is now due to be replaced on the Cowes-side, according to Cllr Karl Love.
He has again called for action.
However, hours before the chain ferry could be withdrawn for Thursday's work, it has already been taken out of service.
An unconfirmed report suggests there is a problem with fuel.
The Jenny Lee is running for foot passengers.
