Isle of Wight couples get married at home and abroad

They have endured numerous changes of plan due to lockdowns and changing regulations.

James and Mariam Tuffin were one such couple who decided to press ahead with their wedding despite the Covid crisis. They were married on March 27 in Zug, Switzerland, where they are currently living, but James's parents are from the Island and he originally proposed to Mariam in front of them.

On the big day, Mariam wore a cream-coloured dress with lace and flowers with silver thread and beautiful silver shoes with crystals from TK Maxx in Newport, while James rocked the relaxed look in a blue shirt and jeans and a beautiful watch, which was a gift from his dad.

Mariam said the best bit was the certainty of James's "yes" and when he put the ring on her finger. The couple are devout Christians and wanted to thank their family, friends and the Lord for making their day so special.

Paula and Julian Charge from Cowes were also married in March in Mooloolaba, in Queensland, Australia. Paula said: "Fortunately we were lucky enough to get married with the only hitch being the potential rain which was forecast.

A back-up location at the hotel was arranged, should we not have been able to use the roof terrace for the ceremony. However we have had less success with a reception. After three attempts we have cancelled all together."

She said the best bit about the wedding was the location and they also wanted to thank the wonderful celebrant who married them in Australia, Belinda Tee, who made the ceremony so personal and fun.

Debbie and Andrew Penketh (main picture, above) from Newport were married in August at St Mildred's Church, Whippingham.

The marriage proposal was romantic: Andy took Debbie on a surprise trip to Paris after she finished university. They went for dinner and boat trip to see the Eiffel Tower at night and Andy popped the question after a magical evening.

Debbie said: "Our original wedding date in June was cancelled due to lockdown. We decided to get married five weeks before the day, which was challenging to ensure everything could be organised, such as the church, photographer, dress alterations, flowers being ordered and family could make it.

"With both of us working through lockdown as a community nurse and lifeboat fitter, it was a real celebration when we finally got married. This year has brought us closer together and made us appreciate the time we can spend with our family and friends."
