Newport’s Pyle Street Co-operative store, which includes the town centre’s post office, is due to close in February 2021.

Job losses are expected.

The company has confirmed that although the branch will continue to operate over lockdown, it will permanently shut in early spring.

In a statement a Co-op spokesperson, said: “The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and while this often involves opening new stores, we also have to take difficult decisions and review our existing sites and how they support our goals of creating a compelling offer for communities, viably and conveniently.

“Our Pyle Street, Newport, store will continue to serve our community through the present lockdown.

“However, after careful consideration, it will close next year.

“The decision is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment of colleagues, who have been informed and are being fully supported. We would like to thank the community for its support over the years.”

A spokesperson for the Post Office said: “We have received a resignation for the operator for Newport Post Office, which will take effect in February.

The Co-operative says it continues to look for new community sites on the Isle of Wight.

“The vacancy will soon be advertised on our website www.runapostoffice.co.uk and our field team will speak to local retailers as we know how important a Post Office is to a community.

“Alternative branches in the area also include Pan, Carisbrooke and Gunville.”
