POST Office staff alerted the police about a suspicious package — which on investigation contained Class A and Class B drugs.

Isle of Wight Police hailed the "fab community work" from their Newport Shopwatch scheme, which helped lead to the arrest of a man suspected of being involved.

A spokesperson said: "On Wednesday we were notified by Post Office staff about a suspicious package which they believed did not contain what it should.

"We attended and sure enough that package contained drugs which we believe are Class A and Class B.

"It transpired these had been sold from the Island and were heading to the mainland.

"Needless to say we made sure the parcel never arrived.

"We arrested a Newport man for being concerned in the supply of drugs which have been sent off for testing.

"We carried out a premises search where we recovered further items related to this incident.
