THE COPLAND family — left devastated after the fatal car crash that killed mother Yvonne and seriously injured three other family members — have thanked those involved in the aftermath of the accident.

Essex woman Yaashmi Ravikumar, 20, was sent to a young offenders' institute on Monday after admitting to causing the crash that left Yvonne Copland, 64, dead.

A double decker Southern Vectis bus and two cars were involved in the horrific incident near Newport in April, 2019.

Yvonne's daughter Michelle McMahon released a statement this week on behalf of the family.

It said: "We are pleased that the criminal investigation has reached a conclusion. We hope it will teach a lesson to inexperienced drivers to be aware of their surroundings and pay attention to road warnings, markings and changes in road surfaces.

"We would like to pay tribute to our dear Mum Yvonne who lost her life on that day in tragic circumstances, and to our dear Dad Derrick, brother Warren and his partner Richard for their strength and determination in recovery from their life-changing injuries.

"We would like to say a final thanks to the Isle of Wight Emergency Services and First Responders, University Hospital Southampton, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance and Thames Valley Air Ambulance for their exceptional care.

"Also thanks to Hampshire Constabulary for their thorough investigation into the collision and all of our families and friends for their support during this difficult time."
