WHEN is a download not a download?
How many people are walking around the Isle of Wight this morning with their phone in pocket or their bag, with the NHS trace-and-test app, whirring away in the background helping to keep them safe?
These are the questions that will be on Islanders' lips today after a baffling 24 hours in which three different figures for the amount of downloads for the app have been bandied about.
At the weekend, a press briefing by Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely, NHS chief data officer Dr Geraint Lewis and IW public health director Simon Bryant, gave a figure of 55,000 downloads.
But yesterday, when the County Press asked Bob Seely for an updated figure, he showed us a letter he and Isle of Wight Council leader Cllr Dave Stewart had written to ministers Matt Hancock and Nadine Dories trumpeting the fact there were now 65,000 downloads, although the MP did tell the County Press this included a number from the mainland.
It got more confusing, when just after deadline for the print edition, the Isle of Wight Council told us there would be a Department of Health press release today saying there were around 52,000 downloads on the Isle of Wight.
And to get us scratching our heads even more, at the teatime Downing Street briefing, transport minister Grant Shapps then quoted 73,000 downloads.
Confused? We certainly are...but will be seeking the clarity the Isle of Wight deserves during today.
As they say in the movies, watch this space!
