A PUBLIC right of way over the cliff top at Shanklin's Hope Road remains closed today (Monday).

Emergency teams were called to what was described as a "large cliff fall" on Sunday afternoon.

Dirt and debris tumbled onto the path and road below, as previously reported.

Police, Ventnor and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Teams and the Isle of Wight Council were called to the area at 2.40pm.

The cliff-top path near the Long Stay car park on Hope Road was closed.

It remains shut this afternoon.

There is pedestrian-only access to the revetment.

The local authority says it is monitoring the cliff, although there have been no further falls overnight.

In a statement, an Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said: “Following a site visit this morning, there does not appear to have been any further land fall over night.

"The public right of way along the top of the cliff has been closed and the temporary barriers on the revetment below remain in place, allowing a narrow pedestrian access.

"The area is being monitored and further structural assessments will be undertaken once it is safe to do so”
