A NEW 24-hour gym is set to open in Newport in the new year.

The Gym, part of a national chain, will open next to Burger King and KFC drive-through restaurants, Pizza Hut and Cineworld at the Coppins Bridge leisure park.

Plans to convert the former Office Outlet shop into the gym, with new signage, were approved by the Isle of Wight Council earlier this year.

The Gym has now announced it will open in early 2020 — with cheaper membership fees than the competition.

It will offer an early-bird basic package of £9.99 a month for the first three months, before the price rises to £19.99.

In comparison, Snap Fitness, another 24-hour gym chain, next to Halford's in Newport, charges £34.99 a month for gym facilities and classes.

The Isle of Wight Council's cheapest option, the Silver One Card, costs £25 a month but does not offer use of the gym or fitness classes — it does include access to other facilities at the Heights, Medina and Westridge, such as swimming, squash and badminton.

To use the gym you need the all-inclusive Gold One Card, which costs £39.50 a month and provides access to the Tone Zones and classes.

1Leisure is also running a promotion where new members can sign up for the Gold One Card for £20.19 for the rest of the year.
