A FRIEND of car crash victim Becky Wall is raising vital funds towards her recovery by walking the circumference of the Isle of Wight — barefoot.
Matt Hannah, of Ventnor, began his epic 67-mile coastal path trek on Tuesday, with the aim of completing the challenge over the next four days.
Road crash survivor Becky, who was left fighting for her life after being airlifted from a collision at Briddlesford Road, Wootton, in June, is leaving the Island this week to start the next stage of her recovery at a specialist neurological rehabilitation centre.
Matt, who has currently raised more than a third of his £1,000 target, said: “The 14.3 mile first leg from Yaverland to Blackgang is complete.
“There were some unexpected challenges along the way, such as painful gravel paths masquerading as lovely muddy footpaths, cold feet, rogue stones and an unabated torrent of nettles.
“Thankfully the weather held up and I have reached base camp after the first leg in high spirits.
“Thank you so much to everyone who has supported and donated so far, your kindness has been incredible.
"Becky’s situation has touched the lives of so many people.”
A flood of social media support has been forthcoming since Matt announced his intentions on Facebook earlier this week.
Well-wisher Villy Tichkova, told Matt: “How would you know the earth is there if you never take your shoes off?
“Walking barefoot is such a magical way to feel the earth, I can’t think of a better way to help a friend.”
