A WINDSURFER who crashed into the cliffs at Compton Bay earlier today (Wednesday) has been rushed to hospital after suffering 'extremely severe' injuries.
Freshwater Fire Station, The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team, the Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team as well as the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, were all in attendance just off the Military Road, shortly after 5.30pm.
The Yarmouth RNLI Lifeboat searched the area to ensure no-one else was in the water, and the UK Coastguard helicopter, based at Lee-on-Solent, also assisted.
The coastguard helicopter airlifted the windsurfer from the water.
A spokesperson for the UK Coastguard said: "The casualty is alive and has been passed into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.
"The injuries sustained by the casualty were extremely severe which is what prompted such a large response."
