MORE than 130 bikes flocked to Newport for the Absent Friends Ride last month.

The bikers rode out together for the eighth year running, gathering at St George's, Newport Football Club, at midday, and finishing in Smallbrook.

Organiser Phil Jennings said: "We do it to remember the friends we have lost to accidents, and to remember those who can’t ride with us for many other reasons."

This year the event raised money for local independent lifeboats and the brain injury charity, Headway.

There were many bikes on display, ranging from mopeds and sports bikes to scooters, Harleys and trikes.

As well as donations, there were also patches for sale, and a raffle, with all proceeds going to charity.

"We hope that if seeing that number of bikes reminds just one person to look out for bikes when they are driving, then we have done what we set out to do," said Phil.
