SEVENTEEN-year-old Isle of Wight boxer Jack Murphy — trained at Newport Phoenix Amateur Boxing Club — tested his skills in the ring and passed with flying colours by winning silver in his first-ever championship.
Up against more than 600 boxers from all over Britain and Europe, the teenager, trained by Mike Voisey, made a good name for himself at the three-day MTK Lonsdale Box Cup, held at Penrith Leisure Centre, Cumbria.
On the first day, Jack began well in the quarter-finals, defeating the unbeaten Liverpool boxer, Roein McDonnell, by a unanimous points decision
In the semi-finals, Jack came up against Scottish Youth and Novice Boxing Champion, Lewis Urquhart.
Not fazed, Jack stuck to his game plan and earned a well deserved unanimous decision to book his place in the final on day three of the event.
Jack, pitted against highly-regarded Spaniard C.K.Sean, who is trained at the MTK Marbella Gym in Puerto Bunus, it was bout which tested their skill, fitness and determination to the limit — pushing each other to the final bell.
The Ryde Academy student took the silver medal on a split decision, with one judge of three going for him.
Voisey said: “This was such a great effort by Jack — going all the way to the final in his first championship. He’s shown great qualities in his boxing.”
