ON this day 106 years ago, the Titanic passed the Isle of Wight.
The photograph above shows the liner passing Cowes, shortly after it had left Southampton.
It called at Cherbourg and Queenstown (now Cobh in Ireland) before heading west to New York on April 14, 1912.
The Titanic hit an iceberg four days into the crossing, around 375 miles south of Newfoundland, and 1,503 people died in the disaster.
