THERE are plenty of interesting clashes ahead for the Isle of Wight's trio of Wessex League clubs, with Cowes Sports — off to an encouraging start to their season — facing a big test against Stoneham who have got off a 100 per cent winning start.

There should be a big crowd for the Velocity Wessex League Premier game, with the Yachtsmen already banging in the goals for fun — an astonishing 20 from their first five fixtures.

Cowes Sports goalkeeper Ed Hatt is under no illusions about how big their match at Westwood Park will be tomorrow (Saturday).

He said: "As a team, we’re all excited for it. It should be a great game, as both teams are scoring a lot of goals.

"Also, it’s a good test for us to see how far we’ve come as a team.

"Stoneham are always one of the favourites to win the league, and this year they’re proving it with some great results and form.

"We’re going into the game full of confidence with a nice little unbeaten streak, which we fully hope to extend."

East Cowes Vics have also got off to a flyer in Division 1 — continuing their excellent form from the end of last season — facing struggling Clanfield at Beatrice Avenue.

Vics sit in seventh, with games in hand on most of the sides above them.

Meanwhile, mid-table Newport have seen an upturn in form after a slow start, up against promoted Cove away from home, who themselves have got off to a good start.

The big game in Division 1 of the Island League is between second placed West Wight and leaders W&B at Camp Road in Freshwater.

A win for the hosts would put them level with W&B at the top.

Third placed Cowes Sports Reserves, who have also got off to a great start to the season, have a tricky match at Binstead & COB at 'The Molehill'.

In Division 2, leaders Osborne Coburg, with a 100 per cent win record after four games, are at rock bottom Oakfield.

Unbeaten Sandown and Lake have a tough home game against Newport Reserves, while high-flying Wootton face Ryde Saints, who have lost all their games so far.

The Island's three women's teams — Shanklin Ladies, Cowes Sports Ladies and the Wight Eagles — are all in action on Sunday having played just one match so far in the Hamphire League.
