RYDE and Newport Rowing Clubs' crews and scullers competed at the BTC (Southampton) Regatta — both enjoying some notable successes on Saturday.
BTC (SOUTHAMPTON) REGATTA
Newport Rowing Club's men's novice crew of Boris Hare, Connor Garner, Chris Clarke and Artur Rozvodovski had an encouraging race at Weston Shore, Southampton.
Despite being left at the start, after failing to hear the 'go' out in Lane 6, the crew rowed hard and, with an excellent turn from young cox, Marianna Hare, they closed in fast on Itchen, but they ran out of course, finishing a close second.
For Ryde, the highlight was the performance of their coastal junior A crew of Matt Chalmers, Ben Sanderson, Will Hall and Paddy Kearney, coxed by Mia Mackay, who convincingly won their final to notch up their second Hants and Dorset Championship win of the season.
Isaac Gibson, Charlie Watts, Lars Groothuis, Joe Bird and Harry Watts (cox) competed in the J16 coxed quad, where they sculled really well to finish second.
The club had two men’s coastal junior pairs competing against each other — the A crew of Hall and Kearney, and the B Crew of Dan Sanderson and Matthew Groothuis.
The A crew finished second, and the B crew, sixth.
There was a third place finish for the ladies' coastal junior pairs crew of Stella Baisley and Chloe Hughes.
Ladies' novice sculler, Baisley, then raced really well to come second in her final.
Dan Sanderson and brother Ben then competed in the men’s novice sculls event, with the latter coming second in his heat to qualify for the final, where he finished fourth. Dan came a disappointing fifth in his heat.
Bird also competed in a Ryde and Poole composite crew, finishing fourth.
Finally, the club competed in the Arthur Shergold Memorial Race for mixed fours — a crew comprising two men and women of different rowing status — with the Ryde crew of Hughes, Matthew Groothuis, Chalmers and Baisley, with Bird coxing, finished sixth, while Ben Sanderson competed in a Ryde and Poole composite crew which came fourth.
