All three of our Isle of Wight Wessex League sides were in action yesterday afternoon (Saturday, April 15).

The Yachtsmen welcomed midtable Shaftsbury to Westwood Park in the Premier Division.

Meanwhile, Newport took on Division 1's league leaders in a title showdown - knowing a defeat would count them out the title race, returning to Andover for the second time in three days.

Vics, who secured safety last week, travelled to promotion hopefuls Hamworthy.

Cowes Sports 2-1 Shaftsbury

Neither side could hit the back of the net during the first half hour of the game, and despite plenty of back-and-forth action, no major chances materialised.

The Yachtsmen eventually found the opener in the 36th after Jimmy Mumford was brought down in the area, with the penalty cooly dispatched by Fin PHILLIPS.

Five minutes after the break, Shaftsbury almost equalised after a cross was directed toward goal by a Cowes defender, forcing supporter’s player of the year Ed Hatt into a great save.

In the 56th, Shaftsbury found an equaliser through Eder Baptista.

The away side almost took the lead in the 69th, as what seemed to be a certain goal ended up smashing against the crossbar, and the rebound from the edge of the box was dealt with by Hatt.

Right on the stroke of 90, Harry West was brought down in the area, and Cowes substitute John McKie stepped up to bury it with ease.

In the final few seconds, the referee dished out multiple cards, with two Shaftsbury players sent off, another sin-binned, and the manager sent to the stands.

Andover New Street 4-1 Newport

Newport failed to keep their title hopes alive and must, instead, settle for a play-off place in Division One after defeat away to league leaders (now champions) Andover New Street.

The home side took the lead with around 15 minutes on the clock, the goal coming courtesy of Layton Tulk.

It would only get worse for Port as New Street’s Ross Cook would bury it past Joe McCormack twice in ten minutes, first in the 20th and again in the 30th.

Coming out from half time 3-0 down, Port had been revitalised and started putting pressure on the league leaders, with some good crosses into the box, but all collected by the New Street keeper.

The pressure almost paid off, as Port’s Spike Pearce saw his headers cleared off the line on the hour mark.

Joe BUTCHER would give the Islanders something to cheer about in the 83rd, but two minutes into injury time, New Street sealed the title through Cameron Thatcher – despite calls for offside – who made it four.

Hamworthy Recreation 2-0 East Cowes Vics

Vics brought a coach load of supporters to Hamworthy and gave their side plenty of support throughout.

The Island side was awarded a penalty in the 15th after Josh Neale was brought down in the box, but Callum Chase’s attempt produced a great save from Hamworthy keeper Callum Watson.

Ten minutes later, Vics would find themselves one down after Brad Waters outpaced his defender, controlled well and fired into the back of the net.

Coming out for the second half, the Islanders managed to create the better chances, with Hamworthy fending off a spell of intense pressure.

The score stayed the same until five minutes from time when Waters was brought down in the area and up stepped Jack Satterly to smash it past Alex Ram to seal all three points.
