The owners of a farm in Ashey have praised hero firefighters who did "an excellent job" in preventing the spread of a large blaze overnight.

No one was hurt but, nonetheless, it was still a "scary experience" for the owners of East Ashey Manor Farm.

It's understood the roof to the barn building, which was close to the owners' family home, has been destroyed.

Four engines, from Sandown, Ryde, Newport and Shanklin, were alerted at 12.46am.

Two officers and a water carrier also attended and hydrants, jets and hose reels were used to douse the flames.

A single appliance remained on scene this morning.

The owners of the farm told the County Press: "The fire service did an excellent job containing the fire so it did not spread to any other buildings and we are very grateful."

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed it is not investigating the fire and officers have not been required to attend.
