An exhibition is being held in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight this morning (Monday), by a group concerned by plans which could see a new national coastal path re-routed along a main road.

Updated: Protest over English Heritage's Osborne House coastal path refusal

Despite being proposed years ago, the King Charles III Coast Path - a 2,704-mile stretch around England - has not yet been completed.

One of the main sticking points it that the East Cowes to Wootton route has yet to be determined.

Natural England, the agency responsible for the coastal path, had proposed the footpath to go through the Osborne House estate.

However, it has been reported that English Heritage, which manages Osborne, will not allow this due to security fears over Queen Victoria’s belongings.

The Isle of Wight Ramblers group has said an alternative route would take walkers along York Avenue, towards Whippingham, which it does not agree with.

The group asks: "We are being told to walk along the busy main roads - why?"

An open meeting is being held at East Cowes Town Hall from 10.30am and there will be displays showing the issues.

At 11.30am, there will be a meeting chaired by Kate Ashbrook, Vice-President of the Ramblers.

At 1pm there will also be a picnic at Jubilee Recreation Ground, before a rally at the entrance to Osborne House.
