After years of delays and setbacks, the Isle of Wight's 'planning bible' will once again go before councillors tonight (Wednesday).

An extraordinary full council meeting is being held at County Hall and the draft Island Planning Strategy (IPS) is among the agenda items.

When approved, the IPS will set the Island's housing targets, try for more affordable housing discounts and update planning policies.

For seven years, however, discussions have gone back and forth, with disagreements over what still needs to be amended.

To date, it is estimated to have cost £660,000.

It was discussed further at a council cabinet meeting last week, when tempers flared between council leader Cllr Phil Jordan and Cllr Peter Spink.

There was a unanimous agreement to recommend the IPS to full council.

It was recognised that although not all councillors agreed with all aspects of the IPS, it gives the council the best opportunity to put a plan in place as quickly as possible.

Tonight's meeting starts at 6pm.

The County Press will be running a live blog so you can keep up to date.
