An Isle of Wight man says he has “learnt his lesson” after being caught riding a motorbike while over the limit for two drugs, unlicenced and uninsured before he injured a police officer with a kick.

Callum Fry, of Regent Street, Shanklin, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on April 9 for sentencing.

The 20-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of drug driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, resisting a constable in the execution of duty and two counts of failing to surrender to court.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said police were alerted to a man, identified as Fry, riding on Marine Cross Road in Shanklin on a Yamaha MT motorbike.

Ms Miller told the court that police attended Fry’s address and saw him getting off the bike.

Officers shone a blue light to make their presence known and requested Fry to stop where he was before Fry attempted to get back onto the bike and escape, the court heard.

Ms Miller said Fry kicked out at an officer, injuring their ribs, after they tried to grab him.

Fry was arrested and, at Newport Police Station, he was found to be over the legal limit for cannabis and BZE – a derivative of cocaine.

Bridget O’Hagan, defending, described her client as ‘incredibly naive’, but told magistrates it was highly unlikely they would see him again in the courts.

Magistrates handed Fry an 18-month community order to include 80 hours of unpaid work, 20 rehabilitation days and a thinking skills course.

He was also disqualified from driving for 20 months and ordered to pay a £114 surcharge and £85 costs.

Fry told magistrates he had “learnt his lesson.”
