Almost 200 drivers were caught speeding on the Isle of Wight's roads by police last month (September), the force has confirmed.

A total of 190 speeding drivers were caught by the Safer Roads Unit, which is part of the police’s wider Joint Operations Unit (JOU) serving all of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the Thames Valley.

September's drivers were caught at 22 different locations across the Island on 44 separate police visits.

In comparison, 198 drivers were caught on 28 separate occasions in August.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We know poor driving standards, including speeding, are a common concern to local residents on the Island, which is why we have been providing you with these regular updates, so you can see a small snapshot of some of the work that goes into this.

“Speeding is, of course, just one of the issues motorists face on the road network, and we have a number of teams and other initiatives running on the Island that tackle the broader spectrum of offending to keep our roads safer.”

If you have information about specific issues or problem areas, IW Police are asking you to call 101 or visit the Hampshire Police website HERE.

Police have set up 'Operation Mile', which looks at all the data provided by the public and informs local teams they should have a presence on the roads, targeting hotspots.

A combination of tactics is utilised to catch drivers breaking the law, depending on the team involved.

The Road Policing Unit patrol and pull offending vehicles over, bolstered by mainland officers who come over periodically to support ‘Operation Wightwash’, an intensified roads policing enforcement operation.

Meanwhile, the Safer Roads Unit, specifically, use the mobile camera van.
