IT WAS a special occasion on Shanklin seafront yesterday (Thursday), as hundreds of Islanders flocked for the annual regatta.
And it was a particularly spectacular one this year, as organiser pushed the boat out for the 170th anniversary, making it one of the biggest to date.
The event kickstarted at 10am with a packed-out programme of new and traditional regatta offerings.
This included a lifeguard display, artist competition, magic show, tug of war, and various races, to highlight a few.
Once again, crowds gathered for the age-old tradition of crowning a regatta queen.
Just a point separated first from second, and second from third, in a hotly contested affair, but it was 16-year-old Alisha Hilsum, from Ryde, who claimed the ultimate prize.
Linzi Lloyd, 36, from Winford, and Abbie Plaw, 21, from Maidstone, came second and third respectively.
Alisha bagged herself £150, Linzi £100, and Abbie £75.
Meanwhile, in the knobbly knees competition – another which is steeped in history – Imogen Jones emerged victorious, winning £50.
But knees and countenance were not the only qualities under scrutiny.
Further down the beach, children and adults of all ages competed in a myriad of shore sports, ranging from relay races to novelty games; three hours of competition.
The event closed with a grand fireworks display at 10.30pm, which was preceded by entertainment from Bethan John Music, Huxley the Magician, MLD Dancers and Raw Samba Band.
