ISLANDERS have been warned about the dangers of ‘food’ defences after signs were installed with a typo.
The signs were placed at Simeon Recreation Ground in Ryde following work by Southern Water to improve conditions in the area, which floods after heavy rainfall.
But instead of warning visitors not to climb on the flood defence wall, the signs informed Islanders of the dangers of ‘food’ defences.
Residents were quick to spot the missing letter and a flood of comments were posted on social media.
Victoria Fellows, from East Cowes, said: “Bloody dangerous sandwiches out in force in Ryde.”
Simon Walker, from Ryde, said: “It stops the seagulls stealing your sandwiches, clearly.”
Zena Whiteside added: “Well when the flood comes we can eat our way out of it.”
The Isle of Wight Council said: “The Environment Agency has been advised of an error on flood defence signs it has provided as part of the Monktonmead flood prevention scheme at Ryde. It will be amending the error, which omitted the letter ‘l’ from the word flood.”
The Environment Agency said: “An error was spotted in the signs for the Monktonmead Brook flood scheme, which are now being replaced.
“The scheme is now complete and is reducing the risk of flood to more than 300 properties in Ryde.”
